WINTER SPORTS PROGRAMME – COLLEGE

Welcome to the Chesterhouse School sports department. As a school that truly understands and lives the philosophy of Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds, we place a strong emphasis on sport ensuring each child is enrolled in a summer and winter sport. We take part in sports leagues and competitive matches across the peninsula.

We offer sport in two streams – competitive and social.

Competitive sport is for those pupils who excel and enjoy sport and wish to play as part of a team representing their school. In the High School we focus on three main sports; cricket and hockey for boys and hockey and netball for girls. We have entered the schools’ leagues in these sporting disciplines and grow in strength and ability from year to year attracting talented sport pupils who seek to join Chesterhouse for its competitive approach and for the all round educational experience that we offer. In recent times, our tennis teams have also excelled and we are very pleased with the progress of our pupils and the increasing reputation that Chesterhouse School enjoys.

In understanding the ambitions of competitive sport, we have embarked on a programme of offering the best coaching available and have for this reason, employ specialised sports coaches in the sports disciplines that are enjoying popularity and growth. We have a number of staff who have achieved and played sport in the provincial and national leagues. Due to this sports talent at our school and under their direction, we manage and achieve much.

As the school grows in pupil numbers, we envisage adding to our sports menu and being able to have more depth in our teams in the sports disciplines in which we find much interest already. We do realise that to best serve the needs of our children we have to offer a menu that accommodates the different interests and thus offer the following sports:

  • For boys: Cricket, hockey, tennis, running and swimming
  • For girls: Hockey, tennis, softball, swimming, running and netball

Social sport is offered to pupils who do not wish to compete in the various sports matches played. This is in keeping with our principle of Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds and we ensure that every child plays a sport and remains physically active. The same sports disciplines are offered as per competitive sport. We do from time to time encourage those pupils taking part in social sport to play a match and experience the importance of being part of a team and standing together for each other and for the school.

We make use of our sporting facilities – our tennis courts which become netball courts in the winter months, our Olympic size swimming pool and our recently developed Westerdale sports fields, 200 metres from our school campus, where we play both cricket and hockey. We provide transport to and from Westerdale and Chesterhouse School.

At Chesterhouse we have two houses – the Falcons and the Eagles. The Falcons are represented by the blue colour, while the Eagles are represented by the colour yellow. The school holds annual inter house sports days, swimming galas, winter sports matches and summer sports matches. The pupils in the houses also enter into some stiff competition in Literary Quizzes, inter house debates and sing off’s.
